Texting that saves lives

ESY Day 9: Welcome to your final post of the ESY 2012 program.

Nancy Lublin is CEO and Chief Person at DoSomething.org, where she harnesses the extraordinary energy of teens and focuses it on issues they care passionately about.

When Nancy Lublin started texting teenagers to help with her social advocacy organization, what she found was shocking -- they started texting back about their own problems, from bullying to depression to abuse. So she's setting up a text-only crisis line, and the results might be even more important than she expected.

Answer these questions:

1. Based on the information you heard from Nancy Lublin, can texting actually save lives? Why or why not?

2. Would you vent to a complete stranger about your personal life over a text? Why or why not?

3. Is Nancy Lublin an activist? Why or why not?

  1. 1. Based on the information you heard from Nancy Lublin, can texting actually save lives? Why or why not?

    - Based on the information I heard from Nancy Lublin, I think texting can and cannot save someone's life. I say it can because as Nancy mentioned in the video it is a safer way of getting help. It can't because, when in an emergency who has time to sit there and text for help?

    2. Would you vent to a complete stranger about your personal life over a text? Why or why not?

    - No I would NOT vent to a complete stranger. It's bad enough I don't vent to people close to me, so why a stranger? You don't know who can actually be on the other side of the phone. To tell someone your life story, you have to have trust in someone. There are many sick perverts and people out to hurt you and the person you're texting just might be one.

    3. Is Nancy Lublin an activist? Why or why not?

    - I strongly feel that Nancy Lublin is an activist. I believe she's an activist because, she and other people came up with an organization and hotline for teens who need someone there for them to turn to when in need.

  2. 1) Based on Nancy's presentation I do believe texting can save lives because creating that hotline gives teenagers a voice without actually speaking. Its not always easy to state your problems, and texting is a fast, quiet, and private way to speak upon your issues with a 100% open rate. Therefore meaning, no matter what time you send it, if the message actually goes through the person you texted will always see it unlike email. Nancy did not state any life saving experiences that occured but I do think it is possible. With the help of the crisis hotline every kid has someone to listen to them. That one text can be so meaningful, and save or change someone's life.

2)Honestly at first i would be opposed. I don't think it would be my first result, I would go to a friend first but if all else fails I would. Speaking to a stranger is speaking to someone who knows absolutely nothing about you. There is no room for judgement and if they do judge, its not like they're someone I love, care for or knowingly see everyday so It wouldn't matter much to me. They would give honest and true answers for my situation reguardless of what I may feel.

    3) I do think Nancy Lublin is a activist, with the mistaken consequence of teenagers expressing their personal issues, she became extremely passionate and felt it was her duty to come to their rescue and just be there whenever they needed. She made the crisis text hotline to hear these issues and refer counseling and ways they can overcome these obstacles.

    1. I do believe that texting can save lives after watching this video. I found out there are more kids like me that find it easier to text there issues than speak on the phone or talk face to face. When texting your alone no one else can hear or see and you feel secure.

    2. I'm not sure i would because i don't know them like that for them to be all in my business. But i do find it easier to express myself and vent through text messages.

    3. I believe nancy lublin is an activist for making a hotline and helping out students through text. She wanted to help all the kids with their issues and she tried her best to do so and help every last kid.

    1. I believe that texting can save lives in a sense. If there is a person who doesn't have anyone to talk to or vent to they could send a message and that one message they sent could help them in more ways than anyone could imagine. Just letting one thing out can make a world of difference.

    2. Knowing how I am, I don't think that I would be able to vent to a complete stanger over text about my personal life because I don't trust a lot of people. I'm very serious about who I tell my business to because I'm paranoid of who might come back to me and tell me about it.

    3. Nancy Lublin is definitely an activist. She is for a cause to help complete strangers with what bothers them the most. She allows them to vent and when she hears (or in this case reads) their problems, she can try her very best to see what she can do for them.

  5. 1. I think texting can save lives because if someone needs to really talk to someone but feels more comfortable texting about it than talking, it might help them a lot. More people will start talking about their prolems and more people will get help.

    2. I wouldnt trust a complete stranger with all of my problems but i think its better than talking about it to someone i know because i wouldnt really feel comfortable.

    3. Yes nancy is an activist because she is spreading her idea and hotline she created to teens so they can vent about their problems and get help. She is saving their lives by showing them this.

  6. 1)Based on the information you heard from Nancy Lublin, can texting actually save lives? Why or why not? i do believe texting can save lives because for people its alot easier to open up to someone over text because you dont have to see there reaction and what they might think of you
2)Would you vent to a complete stranger about your personal life over a text? Why or why not? No i wouldnt, i dont trust anyone not even my self sometimes, so i find it easier to keep to my self.
3)Is Nancy Lublin an activist? Why or why not? yes nancy lublin is an activist because she an idea for change and shes trying to do something and help people and wants to try and prevent others from having problems.

    1. Based on the information i do believe texting saves lives because some people perfer to tell someone something in text rather than in person because either their shy or to scared to express there feelings face to face with a person.
    2. I would not vent to a complete stranger because i feel like it is none of thier business. I have trust for no one and i dont think that a stranger will even care if i vent to them because the whole point is THEY DONT KNOW ME !
    3. I do think that she is a activist because she is trying to help people and make a change

  8. 1. I think texting can save someones life. Texting can save someones life because what if the someone can't talk, how are they going to be able to communicate

    2. No I would not because, why would I give a complete stranger my number and if I did, I don't know them personally.

    3. I believe Nancy is an activist because she never gave up on her idea/belief.

  9. 1. I believe texting can save lives. From what Nancy Lublin is trying to say is that one text can make a whole difference. If a person feels more comfortable texting than talking then thats okay. A text can make difference. If more people talk about their problems during text a lot of people would get help.

    2. I wouldnt be comfortable venting to a complete stranger because i dont know that person. I dont know what they will do to the information that i would give them. I also wouldn't know if their going to use that information against me. I would feel better venting to someone i know or i'm close with.

    3. Yes Nancy Lubin is an activist because she is saying that a text can help save lives. That its okay for teens to vent to strangers if they need to. If they cant talk about their problems to a family member or someone they are close with then tell it to stranger. Maybe if you vent to a stranger it can save that one persons life.

  10. 1) In opinion I think texting can save lives, sometimes its easier for people to say things through text then in person, its easier for a person to put things into words than really saying it themself.
    2) I definitely would not vent to a stranger , because if I had a serious problem that I'm dealing with and its really personal I wouldn't vent to a stranger. you'll never know whether or not the person would snitch on you and it'll get unnecessary people like cops or whoever involved.
    3) Nancy lublin is an activist because she's trying to make a change by helping people that need somebody to talk to. instead of talking in person they would rather text .

  11. 1. Texting can save lives , its much easier to do than calling someone. If your in trouble and you cant call you can text , it'll help you out more and people will understand, then again people might not take certain texts serious and they wont get it unless they actually hear you or see that you are actually in trouble.

2.I wouldn't vent to a complete stranger through text , i wouldn't vent to a complete stranger through anything , I don't even like venting to people I know . I know people would probably think of it as like... Well I don't know you and you don't know me so it shouldn't matter , but no, I wouldn't do it .

    3. Nancy is an activist because she created a hotline to help children get help through texting out something that they would most likely be afraid to say to others.

  12. I believe texting can save lives. Nancy Lublin explained how texting someone can save a life because everyone can send a quick texts and if more people talk about their problem throughout texts.

2.I wouldn't be comfortable to vent to stranger any of my big problems but if I have a small problem I would. Another thing is you don't know he person and what they do maybe just to spy on you.

    3. Nancy Lublin is an activist because she helping children life everyday with a simple text. This can help millions of teens because everyone can just send a quick text message.

  13. Based on the information you heard from Nancy Lublin, can texting actually save lives? Why or why not?

    1. i do believe texting can save lives because if something is happening to someone and there too scared to tell someone face to face it might be essayer to tell someone in a text.

Would you vent to a complete stranger about your personal life over a text? Why or why not?

    2. no because what if you tell them stuff about you and you don't know what kind of person they are. they might be the type of people that you tell something to and then he or she might go around telling everyone.

Is Nancy Lublin an activist? Why or why not?

yes because she's trying to help people and she made a hotline for teens that need help with there problems so she could try her best to help them not make the worse mistake of there life

  14. 1)I dont think texting saves lives because it can be used as a major distraction. When people text and drive it can be the cause of a fatel car accident. also when people text and walk they can be so distracted that they can walk into on going traffic.

2)No because i wouldn't want any random stranger in my personal business.

3)Yes i think Nancy Lublin is an activist because shes trying to fight for something she believes in. Shes fighting for teen rights on text messaging. She proves a strong point for us teens.

  15. 1) I honestly think that texting "in this case" does save lives. Children who are either emotionally or physically abused get a chance to express their feeling knowing they cannot with family or friends in fear of how they will judge the.

    2) I think I most likely will not vent to a complete stranger. I dont see any benefit in expressing my feelings to someone who i would probably never meet again. Also i would never disclose personal information to a stranger, thats one of the first things my mother taught me " Never speak to strangers".

    3) I honestly do not think Nancy Lubin is an activist. I see her as more of a advertiser for people to text who shes advertising for. Orelse now days no one would share private information especially not over a text, Knowing identity theft and etc.

  16. 1.i believe texting can save lives because its the best way for parents to communicate to they kids to see what they doing and how they doing and also when something is going bad texting is the best way to tell someone

2.no i will not vent to somebody i don't know because i don't know the person ,i always ash who this when and unknown number text me

3.yes because she trying to make a hotline for kid that need serious help withe their problems

  17. 1) i think texting can save people life's because you can actually text someone if your in trouble and cant not call them for a specific reason. Texting is easy because it goes right to the person phone sometimes the call does not go threw.

    2) I would not vent to a stranger over a text message because i dont express my feelings to people period. Not even my family because i feel like whatever im going threw i can fix by myself if i got into it myself.

    3) Nancy is an activist because she is helping children. People who don't have anyone to talk to she made a hotline so they can vent and tell someone something to a complete stranger.

1)Based on the information I heard from Nancy Lubin I do believe texting can actually save lives.I believe so because when your texting no one hears you but yourself and your thoughts. If you are in a situation where you cant talk thats where texting comes in and saves your life.

2)No I will never vent to a complete stranger about my personal life because that complete stranger could be a sick person. You never know if the person is going to tell your business to the world and start false rumors.Alot of people think its okay to vent to somebody they dont know because they probably not going to really say anything but thats not always the case.I wouldnt want anybody to know my business.

3)Yes Nancy Lubin is an activist because she opened up a hotline for teen to text out there problems and issues they are having so she could help them.I think that was a good idea because every teen handles situations in there own way. Some feel comfortable venting to strangers.Even though she was sending texts out for her organization and she got those response from those teens she didnt ignore it.She made it her job to help these teens and started another movement.

    1. Based on the information I believe that texting can saves lives, becuase most people text. In today's society technology has improved and has branched out over the years. Espeically with teenagers, almost every teen texts and with the orginization (do something) it can help others.
    2. I personally would not vent to a stanger about my personal becuase I have a great realationship with my parents. We tell each other everything, there are no secrets. I can turn to family and friends for help or support. If I were to lose that connect that I have with them then I would reach out and vent to a stanger. But not every teen has what I have, some might not be able to talk to their parents. They might be confused or afraid about a choice they need to make. For example, like the girl being raped by her father she had no one to turn too. Or the girl cutting herself, she was vulnerable and confused about what she did.
    3. Yes, Nancy lublin is an activist because she is fighting for a cause. To use texting as a way to help teenagers with serious problems, and to spread the awareness.

    1. texting is a good thing & bad thing. as it can save your life it can take it away just ask quick. in society today a text can save your life because that is the fastest way of communication.
2.no not a stranger because trust is something i don't give out to people. and i don't tell ym business to everybody. the stranger would be able to foward & spread my problems. then again it depends on what the problem was
3.yes she is , because she's trying to fight for teenagers to use texting as a way to get help w/ their serious problems

    1. Based on the information I heard from Nancy Lublin, texting can actually save lives because if you let your parents know where you are or siblings are if your about to be in trouble. Also because teens nowadays text more than calling.

    2. No, because it's not their business and I wouldn't trust a random person.

    3. Yes, Nanacy Lublin is an activist because she is fighting to let teens text in case they are in a serious issue. Also because she opened up a hotline for teens to text there issues they are having so she could help them.

1)From what I heard from Nancy Lublin. texting can save lives. This is because many people, including teens feel more comfortable texting than actually being face to face to people. If you are having problems, you can always talk to someone about it. It can help you talk your problems out and it makes you feel better inside. When you keep things inside of you, it just builds up and it comes to the point where you can't take it anymore so you decide to do something stupid. However if we have services like this, there will always be someone to talk to.

    2) Yes I would talk talk to a complete stranger because I think its better than talking to people that you think can trust. Its more private, and it lets you vent about your issues to someone who won't judge you.

    3) Yes, Nancy Lublin is an activist. She is fighting for ways to help teenagers. She helped create organizations to help people deal with their problems. She is fighting for resources and help for teens.

    1) Yes I do believe that texting could save life's. According to Nancy Lublin, text messages has a 100% open rate. Text message can be used to spread awareness which could save many life's. Also many people prefer texting to talk about their problems rather than calling because it helps them be more comfortable, helps them keep their identity private.

    2) I would not share my personal information to a complete stranger because i'm surrounded by many relatives and friends that i could talk my problems and with a find a solution. I believe people seek out to strangers for help because they don't have people who they trust enough to comfortably share their personal problems.

    3) Yes I believe Nancy Lubin is an activist because she is fighting for a cause and she is spreading awareness about the cause. She created a texting hotline for teenagers to share their problems and find a solution. I believe her action defines her as an activist.

  28. yes textin cud save a life because,if some one need help they can just talk to someone about there problems and if y talk to a stranger they don't know you so, they can't judge you.

i don't think its good to give out info to a stranger because now adays its hard to trust people , people are not who they say they are and if you dont know the the, person you should not be tellin them about what happened in ya life

i think she is and activist because she is trying to make a change, a change that will effect alot of people in a positive way

  29. No I don't think texting can save lives because by texting your problems to someone is not helping your problem it is just giving a teenager temporary feeling of comfort

No I would not text my problems to a complete stranger because I know she says she from an organization that helps teens but it could be a fraud for all we know she could be the person I'm venting about

I don't feel she is an activist but I do feel she still gives teens comfort and a feeling of belonging by hearing then out and giving the advise

  30. 1) It's really a yes and no answer. When a person need temporary comfort they text, but texting can also destroy lives.

    2) Should you give personal information to a stranger, no. You don't personally know them and giving personal details about yourself can come back to harm you in the long run.

    3) I feel she is an activist. She is fighting for what she thinks is righting. Texting is a hard topic to change.
